SME owners know more than they think

Most SME owners, particularly those who have been around a while, have never had the "benefit" of formal business study. If you are wondering why the speech marks around "benefit", they're there for a reason.

Although I bit the bullet in my 40's and went to Uni to get my MBA, I remain unconvinced that formal business study is the best use of time or money. This is particularly true of people from the SME sector. Most of the content of business study relates far more to the corporate environment than SME.

The thing I observe with SME owners is often that the level of entrepreneurship and willingness to take a risk is high, but a deep understanding of the principles of business practice are not so much.

Please don't think I'm advocating for all SME owners rushing out to learn a bunch of jargon and the word salad that often accompanies business advisors.

While I'm on the subject, I often scratch my head when I see "Business Advisors" who are delivering strategies and solutions to business owners who might be old enough to be their grandparents.

I don't mean to demean these bright-eyed, bushy-tailed experts. All I would ask is this - where, in your 27 years on the planet did you acquire deep knowledge and understanding of the hidden layes and complexities of SME operations?

Anyway, enough about the whipper-snappers. Bless them for their pants a little too short and their unsettlingly Nazi-era haircuts.

This is about you - the SME owner. I've just seen over the years that as a group (and there are obviously many exceptions) the things you can struggle with are being able to make the space for doing some solid long-term strategic planning, having the resources to execute those plans and sometimes an inability to express what you'd like to achieve in a way that engages your team and creates the momentum for sustained change.

So here's the pitch. I've used my 45 years of SME experience to create resources that are practical, inexpensive, accessible to those who aren't formally educated and very focused on your business, not a bunch of theories.

There is an example of one of these resources on-line now. It happens to be on the subject of Exit Preparation and I'd welcome you going and having a look and seeing if it might be for you.

Just remember, I'm here to support SME businesses everywhere. It's my passion. It's what I do.
